Advent Kids
Hey Parents!
We are excited to provide you with a number of crafts and activities. Each of these are designed to help you and your child grow closer to God this Christmas.
Your kit should include:
1 Advent Calendar and Instruction Sheet per family
1 Advent Puzzle Sheet per family
1 Advent Wreath Craft Packet per child
1 Advent Nativity Poster per child
1 Nativity Star Ornament Craft Kit per child
1 Advent Bracelet per child
Didn’t get an Advent Kit? Or missing some crafts?
Below are a few downloadable files you can use from the kit! Sadly, some of the things listed here aren’t available to download.
Advent Calendar
We created this Advent calendar to help you walk through the story of Christmas with your children. Each day has a few verses to read and/or a suggested activity. As you read the verses, take time to share with your child what they mean to you. The activities are designed to be “acts of service” for your kids, but given your circumstances, they may or may not make sense. We trust you will use your best judgement. As you complete each day, you can mark the day “done” on the calendar by using one of the stickers we provided. You can use this before, during or after the Weekly Liturgy, but it can also be done separately.
Advent Puzzle
You can cut out the provided puzzle, and give a piece each day in Advent, slowly completing the picture by Christmas. The pieces are numbered on the back; there are a few more pieces than there are days in Advent, so be creative!
Weekly Crafts
We have four additional crafts, one for each week of Advent. You can do these before, during, or after the Weekly Liturgy provided in the booklet. (One idea: If you promise a craft after the liturgy, and it might help you get through the service together.)
Week 1 - Advent Wreath
This craft represents a traditional advent wreath. Each candle represents something, and it’s worth talking through the candles. The purple candles represent humility and sacrifice. The pink represents joy. Each week represents something too.
Here’s a brief summary:
Week 1 - Purple - Hope
We trust that even when things are dark, God will come and make things bright again. Hoping is all about waiting, trusting God to come and make things right. God is our light. God can protect us when we are scared.
Week 2 - Purple - Faith
While we wait for God, we choose to trust God. God is here, and we believe in God even when we can’t see God.
Week 3 - Pink - Joy
When we stop and think, we can acknowledge a lot of good things that God is doing. We rejoice in the good that’s in the world, and give God praise. God wants us to be happy, and everyone else too.
Week 4 - Purple - Peace
We trust that God is still at work in the world, making this place better for everyone. This is what Shalom, or the Hebrew word for peace, means: when all is as it should be, and we are getting along with God and others. God wants everyone to be treated fairly.
Week 2 - It’s All About the Nativity Poster
This activity was created so that our children can better understand the Christmas story. Sit down with your kids and ask them the questions on the paper and offer guidance if they need it. Give them time to color and decorate the paper how they want and find a place to hang up the paper for the rest of the season.
Week 3 - Nativity Star
Ornament making is one of our favorite December past times at my house. This ornament is for the star that led the wise men to Jesus. As you make this craft, you can talk to your kids about how God wants to point us in the right direction—towards Jesus. What kind of “signs” do you use to know you’re headed in the right direction?
Week 4 - Advent Bracelet
This is a great little craft to help your kids remember the reason for the season.
Include small pieces not suitable for children under the age of 3.
